Attitudes (1984-89)
for piano solo

COMPOSER'S NOTE
Five Attitudes, a suite of simple piano pieces in contrasting styles, was written for my sister, Alicia Romeo. When we were growing up, our mother often complained that my little sister had a 'bad attitude', so I composed a new 'Attitude' for Alicia for her birthday each year, for five years, between 1984 and 1988. The range of attitudes represented by the set of pieces runs from contemplative to joyful and exuberant. Attitude No. 1 was premiered by Alicia at James Madison University in 1986, and the suite of five movements was premiered by Sammy Marshall at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1989. Five Attitudes was transcribed for harp in 2020, and Alicia (being also a harpist) premiered it at the Branch Museum of Architecture & Design in Richmond, Virginia, in 2021.
